Do You Know Your Company's Strategic Business Objectives? If you don't, you are not alone. But, do you really want to be in that kind of company?

A few years ago I looked at three years of HR strategy documents for a client, and no where did I find a reference to business strategy, objectives, goals, or customers. Yet these were substancial documents. There was clearly a significant investment of time and resources in putting them together. But they were internally focused towards human resources.

At this time of New Year's resolutions I would strongly recommend that every HR leader resolve to get their hands on their company's strategy document, learn its goals and objectives, and make certain they and their teams have a solid understanding of them. Then look at your own goals and objectives. Are they in alignment?

Some of you obviously already know what the strategy and objectives are. So, what are you doing to help make that strategy successful, and to facilitate achieving those objectives? You will be asked to do with less this year. We all will face that challenge. The real opportunity is in doing more that is adding value over the long term. I would bet that if you focus on getting aligned with the business strategy and objectives you will find things you should not be doing, thereby freeing up resources to put toward what you should be doing.

These are challenging times, and that presents opportunities for us to show how good we are.

I have seen what a high performing HR team can do. It is invigorating and fun.
